Tennessee softball defeats Virginia in Knoxville Regional

No. 1 seed Tennessee (44-10) defeated No. 2 seed Virginia (39-14), 7-5, on Saturday in a winner’s bracket game of the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols are a No. 7 national seed.

Sage Mardjetko started for Tennessee and pitched four innings. She recorded six strikeouts and 71 pitches, including 47 strikes, against 16 batters. Mardjetko allowed three hits, including a three-run home run to Macee Eaton in the third inning.

Karlyn Pickens pitched three innings in relief. She totaled four strikeouts and 47 pitches (32 strikes).

The Lady Vols scored five runs in the first inning against Virginia. Elsa Morrison (two), Makenzie Butt, Bella Faw and Taelyn Holley recorded RBIs for Tennessee in the first inning.

Emma Clarke and Butt hit one home run each for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee will next play Sunday in a regional final with its opponent to be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT and an if necessary game will be contested at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
