‘I felt helpless;’ Frantic mom grateful for Brockton officer’s help with choking child

The mother of a 3-month-old is sharing her gratitude to a Brockton police officer who helped an infant choking on a large piece of mucus.Audio from Juliette Leger’s frantic call to 911 Thursday morning shows how frantic the situation was. “I didn’t know what to do, I felt helpless,” Leger said. First responders, including Brockton police Chief Manny Gomes who happened to be nearby, raced to the mother’s home. “It’s probably the most sobering, scariest call you can get as a police officer,” Gomes said. “I don’t know about any more urgent call than that, when I say that mobilized the entire city, everyone is going,” he said. Gomes said the infant was unresponsive and limp when the mother handed the little girl to the officer. He flipped the baby over, gave her several back blows, which loosened the phlegm and eventually used his finger to clear out the obstruction so the infant could breathe again. “It is a tense situation, and after we swept that out of her mouth, she was just about as scared as I was,” Gomes said. The 3-month old was taken to a nearby hospital, and was doing okay Thursday night. “I’m so thankful that I still have my baby girl,” Leger said. “I could’ve been leaving this hospital without her, so I’m just very, very much thankful.”
