Texas A&M star outfielder shines in dominant 2026 season opener

Sports

Texas A&M started off the 2026 college baseball season with a bang, erupting for 15 runs, led by star junior outfielder Caden Sorrell’s two home runs, while standout freshmen Nico Partida and Boston Keller looked the part on defense, and delivered at the plate for four combined hits and five RBI. Defeating Tennessee Tech 15-6, second-year head coach Michael Earely’s team is off to a solid start.

Coming into the season, the Aggie offense looked like the team’s strength, especially with transfers Chris Hacopian, Wesley Jordan, and Jake Duer joining the lineup, all coming off impressive seasons, even though Duer’s 2025 campaign was shortened due to injury. Combined with the return of star hitter Gavin Grahovac, the Texas A&M offense recorded an impressive 18 hits, 14 RBI, and three home runs.

On the mound, making his first start in nearly two years, junior south paw Shane Sdao didn’t flinch, finishing with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, no walks, and throwing 83 pitches. While half of Tennessee Tech’s run game came off a three-run homer, Sdao can rest easy tonight and continue improve as the season rolls on.

Caden Sorrell’s performance wasn’t surprising given his elite talent, showing off his MLB-level power at the plate, while his patience and experience, coupled with his injury-based adversity last season, place him in contention for the No. 1-overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Recording three hits in six at-bats, the Highland Village (TX) native has already established himself as a consistent home run threat, but his patience at the plate and increased focus on getting a hit instead of destroying the baseball will help A&M’s offense find more consistency, especially as the competition increases after this weekend’s series.

Chris Hacopian is already one of the more polished hitters in the county, producing three hits and two runs, making Sorrell, Hacopian, and Gavin Grahovac an extremely dangerous lineup that could lead the Aggies back to the College World Series.
