It may be hard to pick out freshmen Ernestine Kennedy when she has her helmet on but that’s the way she likes it.

PUT ON THE PADS. IT MAY BE HARD TO PICK OUT ERNESTINE KENNEDY WHEN SHE HAS HER HELMET ON, BUT THAT’S THE WAY SHE LIKES IT. SHE’S THE ONLY FEMALE ON THE HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM, AND SHE SAYS HER TEAMMATES TREAT HER LIKE ONE OF THE GUYS. WELL, WHEN I’M ON THE FIELD, THEY DON’T THEY DON’T THEY DON’T CARE. LIKE, ONCE THEY SEE ME START, THEY’RE LIKE, OH, SHE’S ONE OF THE BOYDEN. SHE PLAYS THREE POSITIONS. CORNER SAFETY AND WIDE RECEIVER. AND SHE SAYS GETTING TACKLED DOESN’T FAZE HER. GETTING TACKLED IS LIKE HOW YOU FALL DOWN AND YOU GOT TO GIVE IT BACK UP AGAIN. NOT ONLY DOES ERNESTINE PLAY FOOTBALL, SHE ALSO DOES BASKETBALL AND TRACK AS WELL. HER DEDICATION TO SPORTS IS ONE REASON HER COACH SAYS SHE’S AN EXCELLENT ROLE MODEL TO OTHERS ON HER TEAM. DEFINITELY HAS A GOOD HEAD ON THE SHOULDER. SHE HAS A GOOD FAMILY THAT REALLY SUPPORTS HER. SHE’S JUST STARTING OFF HER HIGH SCHOOL CAREER ON A SUPER POSITIVE NOTE. EVANS SAYS KENNEDY WAS A STANDOUT AS SOON AS SHE STARTED AND HER ATHLETICISM HAS BEEN AN ASSET TO THE TEAM. SHE REALLY JUST FITS IN AND WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS SHE DOESN’T STAND OUT AS A FEMALE. SHE STANDS OUT AS A FOOTBALL PLAYER AND THAT SHE’S JUST AS TOUGH AS THESE GUYS SHE TACKLES. JUST LIKE THESE GUYS SHE BLOCKS. JUST LIKE THESE GUYS. KENNEDY HERE SHE IS, THE FIRST FEMALE FOOTBALL PLAYER AT HOOVER, BUT SHE STILL WANTS OTHERS TO JOIN HER. BEING THE ONLY GIRL ON THE TEAM NOW, IT’S KIND OF LONELY. SO I NEED. I NEED SOME GIRL FOOTBALL PLAYERS. THAT’S RIGHT. Once they see me start, they’re like ‘oh, she’s one of the boys,'” Kennedy shared.Not only does Kennedy play football but she does basketball and track as well.Her dedication to sports is one reason her coach says she’s an excellent role model to others on her team.”She definitely has a good head on her shoulders,” shared head football coach Theo Evans. “She’s staring off her high school career on a positive note.”Kennedy shares that she isn’t the first female football player at Hoover but she still wants others to join her.”Being the only girl on the team now is kind of lonely. So, I need some girl football players,” Kennedy said.

She’s the only female on the Hoover High School football team and she says her teammates treat her like one of the guys.
