LINCOLN, Neb. —

An 18-year-old male has been arrested in relation to a car crash in Lincoln that killed two people and injured 20 others on Memorial Day weekend, according to Lincoln police.

One of those crash survivors had just graduated from Lincoln Southeast.

The family’s joy of her graduation turned to sorrow when her father thought she was dead after a crash.

But he said his prayers were answered hours later.

Hannah Wadiso, 18, graduated high school on May 28.

The next day, her family celebrated her achievement.

“We enjoyed the day happily, enjoyed music, praises,” said Tesfaye Ailbe, Wadiso’s father.

That night, she asked her father if she could go out.

“Around 7 p.m., around there, she said she wanted to go and watch the car race on O Street. ‘Everybody‘s watching,’ she said,” Ailbe said.

As most parents do, Ailbe worried but agreed.

“’Be careful,’ I said,’” Ailbe said. “‘OK, I’ll be careful,’ she said,’” Ailbe said.

Ailbe’s intuition told him something was off.

“My heart didn’t settle down. I simply followed them, went all the way to the Hy-Vee area, and walked around, and I didn’t see them, so I came home,” Ailbe said.

About four hours later, he got a phone call no parent wants.

“Somebody helping her pulling her from under the car said, ‘I got this number. You don’t know me, but your daughter is in accident and in bad shape, please reach her now,” Ailbe said.

Ailbe rushed to the scene only to be told by an officer that his daughter was dead.

“They said you cannot get through, you cannot see her, touch her, this is under investigation,” Ailbe said.

Ailbe said they told him she was killed by a car that rolled on top of her.

“On the road, we cried, fell down on our knees, prayed,” Ailbe said.

Two hours later, Ailbe’s prayers were answered, when he got another phone call.

“She is in emergency, Bryan West, critical condition. The car ran over them and some people around them lifted the car up,” Ailbe said.

After days in the hospital, she opened her eyes.

“Amen, hallelujah, thank you, Jesus, this is a chance,” he said.

He said his daughter cried.

The crash crushed her pelvis but the family believes she’ll recover with time.

“It’s a chance God gave you, daughter, be happy, don’t be angry,” Ailbe said.

The family said they are working to care for Hannah and their other child, who has special needs.

Still, they feel grateful to only be worrying about recovery and bills.

“The other two didn’t get this chance you are the lucky one,” Ailbe said, referring to his daughter, who survived the crash. Two women were killed in the crash.

Alibe said he’s sad for the 18-year-old driver arrested in the crash, saying he’s disappointed in his actions.

“I don’t have hatred, I just feel bad,” Ailbe said.

He’s focused on Hannah and her second chance at life.

“God is good,” he said.
