MILWAUKEE —

Nine months after a woman’s Independence Day murder prompted an Amber Alert to find her 1-year-old son, Milwaukee Police officers arrested the suspected gunman.

Police officers arrested Renado Hall April 3, according to a criminal complaint filed April 6.

In the complaint, Assistant District Attorney Grant Huebner identified Hall, 21, as the person who killed Nariana Staten near 26th and Burleigh on July 4, 2021.

When police realized Staten had a 1-year-old son, Ay’den, who had been with her, they activated the Amber Alert.

In the complaint, Huebner said Hall took the boy to a relative and dropped him off.

That relative called police when they saw the alert.

Hall made an initial appearance in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Thursday, April 7, online records show.

A court commissioner set bail at $150,000 cash.

According to the complaint, Hall threatened to kill Staten because of drugs and other property he said had been stolen from Staten’s home, where Hall had been living.

The document said Hall admitted he and others fired shots at Staten’s sister’s home and Staten’s father’s home “in an attempt to get the cocaine back and to prove that he had nothing to do with the missing cocaine.”

On the day of the homicide, the complaint said Hall told detectives Staten confronted Hall who was at a party with a different girl.

“He claimed that the victim must have grabbed the gun, but then later admitted that he was holding the firearm when the shot occurred,” Huebner wrote. “The defendant stated that he did not intend to shoot her. He claimed it was an accident.”

The complaint said Hall later wrote an apology letter to Staten’s family.

Hall was charged with reckless homicide and 12 other felonies related to the killing, shootings and alleged threats.

His next court appearance is scheduled for April 18.
