MILWAUKEE —

Five people were shot outside Rufus King High School, Milwaukee police said.

It happened Tuesday around 7:25 p.m. at the school near North 19th and West Olive streets.

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said Wednesday officers responded to 911 calls for a fight outside the school.

While officers were en route to the school, the call was upgraded to a shooting.

When police arrived at the scene, Norman said they did not find any victims.

The chief said officers learned there as a fight between two girls outside the school during a girls high school basketball game.

As a “large group” gathered to watch the fight, Norman said a man fired several shots.

Five victims were wounded.

About 7:45 p.m., Norman said three teenage girls showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds.

At about 10 p.m., another teen girl and a woman arrived at another hospital also suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims range in age from 15 to 20 years old.

They were all expected to survive, police said.

Norman said all five were shot during the fight outside the school.

Police have not released their names.

Their involvement in the fight and shooting was still under investigation.

Police do not believe anyone inside the school was injured during the shooting.

Norman said investigators believe the fight stemmed from an argument on Facebook.

Police said they know who they are looking for, but have not confirmed the relationship with the victims.

They are also seeking other suspects who were involved in the fight.

So far, no arrests have been made.

There was not a threat to any other Milwaukee schools.

The school did go on a brief lockdown, WISN 12 was told.

MPS ended its security contract with Milwaukee police.

The superintendent said the district would look to improve security at school activities but did not give specific details.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

No other details have been released.
