The family of a woman hurt in what police call a random shooting said she’s in good spirits. Prosecutors say Marckenzy Edmond shot at two women walking separately at Standing Bear Lake last week.The first woman escaped unharmed.The second, 33-year-old Shantel Thompson, was hit.She survived but was critically hurt. KETV NewsWatch 7 spoke with two of Shantel’s cousins. One who said she was with her the night before the tragedy. Something that was a dream come true for her. There was just one step left.“She was telling everyone I get my bar results on Monday, I get my bar results on Monday,” said Cousin Sharee Bryson. Bryson said when Monday came, she got the news that she passed the bar.A few days later she celebrated with cousin Carlina Thompson.“I mean we just, we just had this joyous news, you know of our baby, passing the bar. Finally, you know,” Thompson said. Not knowing the next day that her life would change forever. “Then that,” Thompson said.Just three days after passing the bar, Shantel was shot at Standing Bear Lake. “We were in shock; I mean there’s just has to be a different Shantel. I mean it can’t be her,” Thompson said.Police said she was the victim in a random shooting.While she survived, Shantel is now fighting to walk again.“Gut-wrenching, that’s the word. Gut-wrenching. Couldn’t believe it,” Thompson said.Even through the tragedy, her cousins said she’s not giving up, and she’s in great spirits. Determined to practice law.But what kind of law, exactly? “She’s practicing disability law. Irony of all of this, that’s just going to make her a better attorney, a great attorney, who better to represent you than someone who has experienced something like this themselves,” Bryson said.They said she hopes to be released soon — but will have extensive therapy. And they will be by her side through it all.“Like she said this is a minor setback for a major comeback and she will be coming back,” Thompson said.In a statement to KETV NewsWatch 7, Shantel said: “Thursday, Oct. 14, marked seven days since the incident at Standing Bear Lake. Right now, I am intensely focused on my healing and I’m not ready to share the details of what I experienced that night.
