A woman in Rockledge was arrested after police said she was running an unlicensed daycare where a boy was hurt last month. Jessica Bogoeff, 37, appeared in court for the first time on Friday. Police said she ran the daycare out of her home and connected with families through parent groups on Facebook. They said she took care of up to eight kids at a time, including newborns. “We have no evidence of her having any childcare background, at least nothing that’s formal and nothing has been run through the proper channels,” said deputy police chief Donna Seyferth. Seyferth said police are investigating Bogoeff after two children in her care were injured. Last month, detectives said a boy at the daycare came home with severe bruising and scratches on his face, neck and along his spine. They said he also suffered an injury on his thigh that looked like the imprint of a hand. “She blamed the other children. One child hurting another,” Seyferth said. “Well once the children were separated from her they were able to extrapolate that she was the one that caused the injuries.”According to the arrest affidavit, the victim said “Jessica did it” when his mom asked him how he got hurt. Bogoeff’s defense attorney argued that point in court. “My position is that simply stating that, ‘I did it’ doesn’t really tell you was it out of intent or was it something out of accident or what happened exactly,” Jay Thakkar said. Thakkar asked the judge if Bogoeff could be released by paying bail for one case, not both. “I’m requesting considering her lack of criminal history and considering that she’s already retained counsel,” he said. The judge denied the request after reviewing the victim’s alleged injuries.Over the phone, Thakkar told WESH 2 News that they deny any wrongdoing and intend to fight this case to exonerate Bogoeff from any criminal acts. Police said the unlicensed daycare has been around since at least December and they worry there could be more victims. Deputy Police Chief Seyferth had this message for parents:“We would sincerely wish if they have any concerns at all, if they took their child there and their child has a mysterious injury, that they would please reach out to us,” Seyferth said. Bogoeff is due back in court next month.
