Parents say their son was bruised by bus driver

Parents in the Humboldt Community School District say their son came home with a bruise under his chin that came from an interaction with his bus driver. Mandy and Todd Oleson’s son, Mason Oleson, is 5 years old. On Thursday, Mason got off the bus with the bruise, his parents said. According to the Oleson family, Mason received the bruise as a result of an interaction after Mason switched seats to sit next to his older brother on the bus. “When he was going to get off the bus, the bus driver grabbed him by his bookbag, pushed him forward, and then took his thumb and pushed his head up,” explained Mandy Oleson in an interview on Friday afternoon. The Olesons tell KCCI they saw the entire interaction from the bus’s security footage, which they say was only shown to them after authorities got involved. Todd Oleson says his disappointment comes with how the district’s transportation director responded once the video was watched. “He contacts me on my way to work and basically tells me all he’s going to do is he is going to be moved to a different bus route,” said Todd Oleson. The Humboldt Community School District would not release the video to KCCI because it’s a confidential student record. In a statement sent to KCCI Friday afternoon, Superintendent Jim Murray says the driver is currently on paid leave. The statement from the superintendent continued to go on and say:”We are currently following procedures and investigating this issue. We can’t publicly comment on personnel matters. Per the district’s investigative procedures, the driver is currently on paid leave. Families can be confident that student safety is our highest priority.”Mandy and Todd Oleson say part of the reason they’re speaking up is because they don’t want another family’s child to feel how Mason does now. “He never wants to ride the bus home again,” said Mandy Oleson, who picked up her son from school on Friday. The Olesons tell KCCI they’re working with a deputy with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office about this incident. KCCI did reach out to the department but has yet to hear back.
