Michael L. Finnell, 28, charged with August 2020 murder of Antony Taylor
A Kansas City man is in jail charged with second-degree murder after an Aug. 2020 shooting and crash. Probable cause documents show detectives used multiple methods to track 28-year-old Michael Finnell after the shooting death of Antony Taylor on Aug. 3. Taylor was killed after a car crashed into a building in the 4900 block of Swope Parkway that afternoon. Taylor, the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash, had suffered a single gunshot wound, and multiple bullet holes were noted on the outside of his car.Police used video surveillance to track the route Taylor’s car took before that crash and were able to determine the shooting likely happened near 46th Street and Indiana Avenue. A canvass of the area recovered multiple spent shell casings along with a laser sight for a gun. Detectives went over large amounts of surveillance video from that night, including video from a KCATA bus, that determined the victim was parked in front of a home in the 4400 block of Indiana where he had an altercation with the suspect.Police used the ATA video, Facebook profiles and messages, rental car license, GPS and speed data, along with phone records to identify Finnell as a possible suspect in the days following the shooting. Weeks later, the Kansas City Crime Lab linked DNA found on the laser sight recovered at the scene to Finnell. Court documents show Finnell was ultimately taken into custody during a traffic stop on Wednesday. He has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Taylor’s death.
