More arrests expected in interstate drag racing

Additional arrests are expected after videos went viral over the weekend showing cars blocking Interstate 55 and doing doughnuts in Jackson. The video was shot about 10 p.m. Friday and shows traffic blocked on the interstate near Lakeland Drive. In the video, several cars can be seen doing doughnuts on the interstate, making multiple skid marks. People are seen dancing and filming the stunts, some getting very close to the speeding cars.After the video surfaced, a juvenile turned himself in to police Saturday afternoon.Jackson police received multiple calls and emails about the incident, which Chief James Davis will lead to additional arrests. “You have jeopardized the lives of many people. It could have been a lot worse than what it was,” Davis said. “We will not tolerate it. That’s why we’ve increased patrols.”Davis said the Jackson Police Department has launched a Highway Interdiction Team that will saturate the interstates 24 hours a day with the help of the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Hinds County Sheriff’s Office.”We’re going to make certain there is a level of accountability for what has already taken place. Also, the police department has expanded its coverage of the highway,” Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said.The mayor said after the COVID-19 crisis has subsided, he is open to exploring options to provide young people with activities to fill the time, but those activities will not include drag racing.
