Lawmaker reports gunshot outside home after receiving hostile letter

Multiple state lawmakers received messages calling for their arrest, alleging ‘unAmerican activity’

State police are investigating after a Franklin County, Vermont, lawmaker reported gunfire outside her home early Thursday morning. Rep. Felisha Leffler, R-Enodburgh, said she was woken up by a loud sound around 5 a.m., though she was unsure if it was a gunshot. Several hours later, after reviewing front porch security camera footage, she identified the sound as a gunshot and called police. The incident came just one day after Leffler received an anonymous letter calling for her arrest. Other lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have gotten similar messages citing so-called “un-American activates.” Capital police are investigating the letters. “When it comes to violence and it comes to carrying out threats, it’s not about sides,” said Leffler, a Republican. In a press release Thursday afternoon, state police investigators said they had not recovered any additional evidence of the possible gunshot. Leffer said she was trying to not assume the worst of the situation, hoping the incident was the result of “someone in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong behavior,” rather than a targeted attack. In a Facebook post on her legislative page, Leffer wrote in-part “I will not be scared by faceless and nameless threats. I’m going to keep working and work harder than ever because clearly we need voices that can work across the aisle, work through the tough bills, and everything else that comes my way.”Anyone with information on the possible shooting is urged to contact the Vermont State Police.

ENOSBURG, Vt. —

Other lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have gotten similar messages citing so-called “un-American activates.”

Capital police are investigating the letters.

I’m going to keep working and work harder than ever because clearly we need voices that can work across the aisle, work through the tough bills, and everything else that comes my way.”
